When you need to break away from the bustling city, you appreciate this guided nature walk above Calanque de Sormiou<\/em>. You reach there a scenic spot within one hour from downtown Marseille, travel time to trailhead included.
Sormiou<\/em> is one of the largest calanques<\/em>\u00b9, these gorgeous steep-walled coves of the Provence shoreline. This calanque is a natural amphitheater: its white cliffs are the terrace seats, the sea is the stage and the little harbor is the orchestra pit!\u00a0
Within 30 minutes from a Marseille district, your local guide has led you into the heart of Calanques National Park<\/em>. And a little further up, from a vantage point, you are thrilled by the dramatic vista! Down there, a cove as large as a fjord stretches: Calanque de Sormiou<\/em> and its turquoise waters ; with a tiny port and its cabanons<\/em> (former fishermen\u2019s cottages), towered over by crags and headlands.

Rich in cultural and natural heritage, this picturesque and moderate footpath allows you to quickly get to the two eastern calanques<\/em>. The hike is an ideal cocktail to discover the peculiarities of Calanques National Park<\/em>, while getting fond of the beauty of Provence seascapes. With your local guide, you start the hike east of Marseille<\/em> from the colorful <\/big><\/small>fishing port of Cassis<\/em>, famous for the high towering cliffs of Cap Canaille.<\/em> And you reach the pebbly beach at Calanque de\u00a0Port-Pin<\/em>, an exquisite cove surrounded by pine trees. On your way back, you walk along the marina where 200 sailboats moor in the Calanque de Port Miou,<\/em> the longest of all.

Discovering Sormiou and Morgiou<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This leisurely hike will allow you to get some beautiful views over the two largest inlets that are called calanques on the Provence coast : Sormiou<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Morgiou<\/em>, amphitheaters of limestone hills and cliffs, with the sea as orchestra and, each one, a little port as stage. Starting from a southern district of Marseille<\/em>, you find yourself after 45 minutes walking, in the heart of Calanques National Park<\/em>, staring down to\u00a0the turquoise blue of Calanque de Sormiou<\/em>‘s waters, 250 meters below, and gazing at the\u00a0red roofs of its ‘cabanons’, these little fishermen’s cottages.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking in the footsteps of C\u00e9zanne<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nature landmark of the countryside around\u00a0Aix en Provence<\/em>,\u00a0with its white limestone cliffs, 10 kilometers in length, and a drop over 1,500 feet (470 meters) on its south-facing side,\u00a0Mont Sainte Victoire\u00a0<\/em>has not ceased to inspire artists, before and after\u00a0Paul C\u00e9zanne<\/em>. This painter is probably the one who has the most intensely immortalized the rocky mount. Trying to capture the ever changing contours, he painted more than 80 pictures of the mountain. Along this backcountry trail, with your local guide, you too will have the opportunity to admire the different views of\u00a0Mont Sainte Victoire<\/em>, like the famous painter used to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This day hike is unrivaled for its land- and seascapes. It is quite a long traverse, from the university campus in Marseille<\/em> to the charming port town of\u00a0Cassis<\/em>\u00a0: through a protected natural area,\u00a0Calanques National Park<\/em>, you walk 12 miles over stony paths. During this trip, you enjoy countless breathtaking views, from at least 3 marked levels : the shoreline, the top of the bluffs, and, at midway up, the balcony trail. Within 7 hours, you have the chance to gaze at all the most spectacular Provence\u2019s calanques: Sormiou<\/em>,\u00a0Morgiou<\/em>,\u00a0Sugiton<\/em>,\u00a0En-Vau<\/em>,\u00a0Port-Pin<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Port-Miou<\/em>. Nothing more needs saying.
This scrambling\/hiking trip requires intermediate-advanced hiking fitness.<\/p>\n

Very quickly accessible from the city of\u00a0Nice\u00a0<\/em>and starting from the town of\u00a0Beaulieu sur Mer<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>this coastal walking path around\u00a0St Jean Cap Ferrat<\/em> peninsula is a short and pleasant getaway from the agitation of the French Riviera resorts. Walking all the way as closely as possible to the sea, you will marvell at the contrasts between the blues of the sea and sky, the whites of the rocks and the greens of the Aleppo pines and garrigue shrubs.
If you start from the town of\u00a0Beaulieu sur Mer<\/em>\u00a0accessible by train (10 minutes away from downtown Nice) rather than from\u00a0St Jean Cap Ferrat<\/em>\u00a0marina, your will walk one more hour.<\/p>\n

Along the Brague river near Antibes

Come and enjoy the peaceful Brague<\/em> Valley that will distract you from the hectic pace of the C\u00f4te d’Azur<\/em> city life for a few hours. It is a very beautiful walk along the river through woods filled with hazel, ash, alder and willow trees. The river offers scenic waterfalls along the way. Trees, small cascades, stone bridges, all this fairy-tale scenery, make you feel like you walk in an enchanted forest.
From the hilltop village of Biot<\/em> to the picturesque one of Valbonne<\/em>, you pleasantly walk back up the shallow Brague<\/em> river, mostly in the shade of various deciduous trees.<\/p>\n

Ten kilometers from the\u00a0Promenade de la Croisette<\/em>, you can start a hike to take on the\u00a0Pic de l\u2019Ours\u00a0<\/em>(1,627ft), one of the peaks of the Est\u00e9rel<\/em>. This is a volcanic range characterized by gorgeous red rock formations that are covered by oaks and pines whose dark colors sharply contrast with. From the heights, you will enjoy a beautiful panorama over the colorful hills all around and, in the distance, over the Golfe de La Napoule<\/em>\u00a0and the city of\u00a0Cannes<\/em>, to the east, and the\u00a0Golfe de Fr\u00e9jus<\/em>, to the west.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After a first stunning view from the Baou des Blancs<\/em> above the town of Vence<\/em> and overlooking the Baie des Anges, Cap d’Antibes<\/em> peninsula and Golfe Juan<\/em>, you will forget for a few hours the glamourous Riviera, hiking through a land once used for agriculture and today devoted to winter pasture : the Plan des Noves<\/em>. You will then walk down into the Gorge de la Cagne<\/em>, cross the river and proceed above the valley floor before climbing to the plateau towards the Baou de St Jeannet<\/em>.<\/p>\n
