The tiny Aiguebrun Gorge:
Luberon\u2019s coolest spot for a guided hike!

As an outdoor lover, you will be lucky to see this spot. Because the secluded Aiguebrun Valley<\/em> is really found off the beaten track. The shaded trail runs alongside the narrow valley floor filled with lush vegetation. Even on hot days, you can follow your guide on this 50,000-year-old walking route in central Luberon<\/em>. Indeed, the Aiguebrun River <\/em>is home to several prehistoric rock shelters and caves: some of them were inhabited both by the Neanderthal and the Cro-Magnon men.\u00a0
The river is today the only permanent one in the Luberon<\/em> mountains. A few miles from the Aiguebrun<\/em> spring, a country inn called Auberge des Seguins<\/em> can be found by the river: it is nestled at the foot of cliff faces well-known for their climbing routes. In the depths of the Luberon’s small valleys

Take a break from the crowds with this joyful walk to a refreshing spot: Saut du Moine<\/em>. This is a waterfall at the confluence of the River Calavon<\/em>, still a small stream, and one of its tributaries. The spot is situated somewhere in the hills between the towns of Apt<\/em>, Forcalquier<\/em> and Banon<\/em>. There, the Calavon<\/em> flows in a north-south direction. But about 15km downstream from Saut du Moine<\/em>, the river changes course, running east-west, then: that is at the point where it meets the foothills of the Luberon<\/em> mountains,\u00a0
On your way to the waterfall, you reach several pretty drystone guesthouses, set in a glen. In this place, a small Cistercian abbey nestled in the Middle Ages.

V\u00e9roncle gorge, an odd canyon near Gordes\u00a0

Embark on one of the most original hiking tours in the Luberon. Not far from the village of Gordes<\/em>, your guide leads you into the lowest section of a 5-mile canyon: it was cut by the River Veroncle<\/em> into the south-western foot of the Monts de Vaucluse<\/em>; these limestone highlands rise between the Luberon mountains<\/em> and Mont Ventoux<\/em>.
What makes this short hike so unique is that the cultural heritage is just as valuable as the natural one: you see during your walk the remains of three watermills, built between the 16th and 19th c. These old buildings are of high quality in an area that was not yet easily accessible: dams, cut stone penstocks, retaining walls, large reservoirs, long canals carved out of the rock, and numerous millstones. A guided hike along the ochre cliffs
of Colorado Provencal <\/em>in the Luberon

To the north of the Luberon<\/em> Regional Natural Park<\/em>, there are still several former ochre quarries that are visible today. One of these most stunning spots is called Colorado Provencal<\/em> because of its red and orange colors. It displays fascinating landscapes, sculptured over the ages both by nature and man, in a broad palette: colors vary from saffron yellow to blood red, including white sands as well. What brilliant colors contrast with the bright blue of the sky and the green shades of trees! In addition to the breathtaking views you get from the pathway, you can see remains of the ochre industry. Your guide will definitely provide you with interesting facts about this economic activity in the Luberon<\/em>. This was a flourishing business in Vaucluse<\/em> during the 19th and early 20th centuries until the arrival of artificial dyes.<\/p>\n

Gorges d’Oppedette: a guided walk
in the most stunning canyon in the Luberon

Situated north-east of the Luberon<\/em><\/span> Mountains<\/em>, <\/span>Oppedette<\/span><\/em>, a former Celtic-Ligurian oppidum,<\/span> is today a tiny hilltop village. However, it sits above one of the most impressive canyons in Provence, somewhere between\u00a0Forcalquier<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Apt<\/em>: a short but spectacular gorge, carved out by the <\/span>Calavon<\/span><\/em> torrent. During this swift trip, your local guide first leads you to several beautiful viewpoints over the gorge; then, he takes you down into it, allowing a real exploration.<\/span>
Another loop route, about twice longer, follows the edges of the cliffs on the western rim; after reaching the southern end of the canyon, you cross the stream on a country road bridge. The walk back to the village on the eastern rim takes partly place on the tiny road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For centuries, they have been standing opposite each other, on their hills, at the foot of the Luberon<\/em>\u00a0mountains.\u00a0Lacoste<\/em> is towered by the imposing ruins of a castle which belonged to the Marquis de Sade<\/em>. From the village, you walk on country lanes across olive groves and truffle plantations, vineyards and lavender fields. These stunning landscapes are the ones described by the British author Peter Mayle<\/em> in his novel ‘A Year in Provence’. He was able to recreate the vibrant ambience so typical of this region of France. The trail to Bonnieux<\/em> through the countryside, offers a multitude of viewpoints over its very picturesque terraces. Once there, you get a panorama that extends from Lacoste<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0Roussillon<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Gordes<\/em>, three of the prettiest perched villages around. In the background, you can see Mont Ventoux<\/em>, the emblematic mountain that you can explore on another hiking tour<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Hiking in the secluded Aiguebrun<\/em> Gorge<\/em>, 10km upstream of the village of Lourmarin<\/em>, is very special; it is indeed very different from a hiking tour in the Luberon<\/em> countryside. The contrast between the cool and humid valley, on the one hand, and the desolate plateau above, on the other hand, is startling. The first one is carpeted with lush vegetation and temperate climate plants as the other is covered with lavender fields and scrubby woods.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a rocky spur high above the tiny valley lie the impressive ruins of a medieval stronghold: Fort de Buoux<\/em>,\u00a0only accessible by foot. Located in the heart of the Luberon<\/em> mountains, this incredible site is today a beautiful and peaceful place. Neanderthals might have experienced this feeling of peace when they chose to settle down there, some 100,000 years ago. Numerous vestiges of a 13th c. castle remain. And your local guide may lead you down a hidden staircase, which is an alternative way down from the fort: but this is not for the faint-<\/span>hearted !<\/span><\/p>\n

Strange rock outcrops\u00a0can be found to the north-east of the Luberon<\/em>, next to the charming town of\u00a0Forcalquier<\/em>. This site, called Les Mourres<\/em> fascinates people because of the number of oddly shaped rocks that can be seen there: several hundreds! Some of them look like giant mushrooms, others like big weird muzzles. As you climb up to the highest part of the trail, you enjoy a beautiful view of the Alps on the horizon. And before the end of this circular walk, you have the pleasure to see a few Cabanons Pointus<\/em>. These picturesque traditional dry stone huts are typical of the Forcalquier <\/em>area. During this both nature and culture walk, you can see one of France\u2019s most beautiful little towns: <\/span>Gordes<\/span><\/em>\u00a0lies on a hill, 20 miles east of <\/span>Avignon<\/span><\/em>. And your local guide shows you then the amazing rural architecture, as you explore the surroundings: dozens of huts and ancient farm buildings, such as cisterns, vats, ovens, sheep shelters, all built in dry stone.
The 12th c. Cistercian <\/span>S\u00e9nanque Abbey<\/span><\/em>, another Luberon’s major attraction, hides in the narrow <\/span>S\u00e9nancole <\/span><\/em>valley, nearby. The church has a harmonious set of buildings considered as one of the purest examples of the Cistercian architecture.

This itinerary starts in\u00a0Castellet<\/em>, a tiny village on the Luberon<\/em> mountains’ north facing slopes. Your local guide takes you within two hours up to the top. If the trail across the downy oak forest is steep, the result is worth the effort: from the Mourre-N\u00e8gre\u00a0<\/em>(3,690 ft), the 360\u00b0 view allows you to gaze at all western Provence’s peaks. When you turn your head north, you can see, in particular, the white ridge of Mont Ventoux<\/em>. And, while looking in the opposite direction, you can spot the Mediterranean Sea <\/em>in the distance. Much closer, you catch sight of Mont Sainte Victoire<\/em>, located across the Durance River<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This hike offers you the opportunity of learning from your local guide about a dark chapter of Provence history: the persecution of the Vaudois<\/em> (or Waldensian<\/em>) in the Luberon<\/em> during the 16th century. From M\u00e9rindol<\/em>, a village by the Durance<\/em> river, you first climb up to the stony plateaus to the north. They are situated at the bottom of the Petit Luberon<\/em> mountains. After a while up there, you start walking down. The final part of your descent into the narrow and spectacular dry canyon is a very special moment: especially in summer, when its cool temperatures contrast with the scorching heat around.<\/span>\u00a0Gorges de R\u00e9galon<\/em> has indeed walls rising more than 200 feet above the path.
<\/span>Note these outstanding features on your way: a breathtaking passage you walk through that is only 30 inches wide and a remarkable cave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A walk from the terraced village of Bonnieux

At the foot of the\u00a0Luberon<\/em>\u00a0mountains,\u00a0Bonnieux<\/em>, one of the largest villages, rises in tiers on a hillside. From the top, you enjoy panoramic views as far as Mont Ventoux<\/em>\u00a0and the Southern Alps, <\/em>in the opposite direction. Closer, you can catch sight of three other perched villages: Lacoste<\/em>, Roussillon<\/em> and Gordes<\/em>.
You first walk down the narrow streets of the village. Then, you roam the countryside made up of vineyards, orchards and woods. After marvelling at this mosaic of a landscape, under the unique light of Provence, you reach Pont Julien<\/em>. This 2,000-year old Roman bridge spans over the Calavon<\/em> river. Before the striking village of Roussillon<\/em> comes out, the trail you follow snakes its way accross wooded hills. To top it off, a dramatic walk on a pathway awaits you in the heart of the village: it allows you to discover the wonderful red colored cliffs made of ochrous sands.<\/p>\n
