When hiking near St. R\u00e9my<\/em>, in the direction of the Alpilles<\/em> ridge, you won’t miss two significant Roman monuments: Les Antiques<\/em>. Located one kilometer south of the town center, and close to the archeological site of Glanum<\/em>, they are 2,000 years old. From there, your guide soon leads you through the picturesque countryside around, on this half-day hike. First, you gladly ramble along olive groves and vineyards. Moving away from the town, you then wander along cypress and oak tree-lined back roads, towards the wild Alpilles<\/em>. While walking at the foot of the range, you finally enjoy peaceful pinewoods, on your way back to the trailhead, as an outdoor adventurer.<\/p>\n

Around the rock fortress of Les Baux

Our guided hike definitely highlights places of historical interest as well as natural beauty. The Alpilles<\/em> is a small range of low but steep mountains\u00a0<\/em>that rise up abruptly somewhere between Avignon,<\/em> Arles <\/em>and the Camargue.<\/em> And if we are talking about mountains and not hills, that’s because landforms here are craggy and rocky.
<\/span>You appreciate there a gentle nature walk all around the monolithic rock pillar, atop which the ruined stronghold sits. The hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence<\/em> is among France’s most outstanding ones. The small roof tiles of its stone houses are towered by the remnants of the medieval castle. The ancient citadel had been for long the symbol of the powerful lords of Les Baux<\/em>.
During this circular, leisurely walk through the countryside, you reach different viewpoints, enjoying breathless panoramas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the footsteps of van Gogh from St. R\u00e9my
Half-day<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

During his time in Provence, near Avignon<\/em>, van Gogh spent one year\u00a0in St. R\u00e9my<\/em>, confined to the Saint-Paul de Mausole<\/em> asylum. This beautiful hike is named after some of the places where the painter set up his easel. Fascinated by the luminous nature scenery, he painted there over 130 paintings. Before walking outside the town, you glimpse the Roman remains of Glanum<\/em> city. Then, after climbing up through the woods to the Alpilles<\/em> ridge, you enjoy outstanding 360\u00b0 views.
This walk is also known as “the Two-holed Rock walk”<\/em> due to two big holes at the base of a crag you reach on the heights. This weathered limestone formation was brilliantly captured by van Gogh in his painting Mountains at Saint-R\u00e9my<\/em>.
On your way back to town, you hike through the picturesque vineyards and olive groves that carpet the landscape near St. R\u00e9my<\/em>.<\/p>\n

From a trailhead located at the pass on the road between Maussane<\/em> and Saint-R\u00e9my<\/em>, you start walking within the Alpilles<\/em>. During most of this scenic walk, you keep all along the ridge line, enjoying breathtaking vistas in all directions. Suddenly, on the horizon, appears before you, among crags, the rock of Les Baux de Provence<\/em>: a ruined fortress towering the tile roofs of the village\u2019s stone houses.\u00a0<\/em>Perched high on an escarpment facing the Alpilles <\/em>ridge, the citadel, was abandoned in the 1630s. Before that, it had been for 400 years the symbol of the power and independence of the seigneurs des Baux<\/em>. These lords had the title of Princes of<\/em> Orange<\/em>. The few streets in the village up to the castle entrance (Ch\u00e2teau des Baux)<\/em> are definitely worth the trip. Moreover, a visit to Carri\u00e8res de Lumi\u00e8res<\/em>, a son et lumi\u00e8re projected onto the walls of a former quarry nearby, might be of interest for you too. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les Opies, atop the jagged line of the Alpilles
Half-day<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Les Alpilles<\/em> seem to be an island in the middle of the plains: south, the Crau<\/em> plain, and north, the southern bank of the Durance River<\/em> near its confluence with the Rh\u00f4ne River<\/em>.
From the peak called Les Opies<\/em>, you get a 360-view of Provence’s scenery: the Luberon<\/em> mountains to the north-east, Mont Ventoux<\/em> to the north and Montagne Sainte-Victoire<\/em> to the south-east.
Starting from the pretty village of Eygui\u00e8res<\/em>, your guide first leads you through olive groves and vineyards to the excavation of a Gallo-Roman villa. This historical site was inhabited from the 1st-c. BC to the 9th-c. AD. Then, when entering the mountain range, your climb to the top should be quite short; but you will face a few steep sections. Whatever it is, you can rest assured that the payoff from this short effort will be worth it!<\/p>\n

You start this guided hike near the center of St. R\u00e9my<\/em>. En route to the jagged Alpilles<\/em> range, you first enjoy the visit of Les Antiques<\/em>. These two well preserved monuments are found next to the ruins of Glanum<\/em>, this ancient city, founded 2,600 years ago.
First walking through pines, on back roads and forest tracks, you then gently climb the Alpilles<\/em> north-facing slope. Up there, you admire beautiful nature scenery all around. Following the ridge trail, you gradually approach Les Baux de Provence<\/em>. Built on a rocky outcrop, the ruined fortress suddenly appears. Once the fief of lords who were among the most powerful in the South of France, this site is unique. The castle entrance and the few streets in the village are worthwhile.
And captivating digital exhibitions at Carri\u00e8res des Lumi\u00e8res<\/em> artistically transform the walls of a one-time limestone quarry.<\/p>\n

An exhilarating hike for outdoor adventurers

This scenic hike too starts near St. R\u00e9my<\/em><\/span>, about 1 km from the Saint-Paul de Mausole<\/em> clinic and from Glanum<\/em>. While not very long, the one-day walk is strenuous and only suitable for hikers without fear of heights. Under the leadership of an expert guide, you hike challenging trails while enjoying spectacular scenery over the Alpilles Regional Natural Park<\/em>.
<\/span>Once you have left Mont Gaussier,<\/em> where the ladder trail with supportive handrail has been cut into a cliff for about 200m, it is time for the last ascent. And you fairly quickly reach the Two-holed Rock<\/em>, an impressive limestone formation, visible from St. R\u00e9my<\/em>, that van Gogh painted. You then walk down a dry valley back to town.

The vista from the Alpilles ridge
Full<\/span> Day<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

To start this day hike, your expert guide can meet you outside St. Remy de Provence<\/em>, near Les Antiques <\/em>(Roman monuments). After one hour of gentle climbing, you are allowed to spend the following two hours walking on the Alpilles<\/em> ridge, up to the top of Plateau de La Caume<\/em>. On the way, in addition to the vast panorama, you discover the great variety of Mediterranean nature, especially flora: the famous rosemary, thyme and lavender, of course, but also dozens of other species that blossom early in the year. The last hour on the heights, at the foot of impressive cliffs, is surely the most challenging.
Back to the plain, it is worth stopping for a visit of Ch\u00e2teau Romanin<\/em>, at the foot of the Alpilles<\/em>. Your local guide can fix a guided tour of the cellar and a tasting of the wines (visit fee non included).<\/p>\n
