Walking in C\u00e9zanne’s footsteps near Aix<\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With its white limestone cliffs, 10km (6 miles) in length, and a drop over 470m (1,500 feet) on its south-facing side, Mont Sainte Victoire <\/em>is a nature landmark around Aix en Provence.<\/em> The mountain has not ceased to inspire artists, before and after Paul C\u00e9zanne<\/em>. This one is probably the painter who has the most intensely immortalized the rocky mount, so emblematic of Provence. Trying to capture its ever changing contours, he painted almost 100 pictures of the mountain. You too, with your local guide, will have the opportunity to admire the numerous views of Mont Sainte Victoire<\/em> along this trail, like the famous painter used to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the footsteps of van Gogh from St. R\u00e9my
<\/strong><\/h3>\n

During his time in France,\u00a0Vincent van Gogh\u00a0<\/em>spent one year\u00a0in St. Remy de Provence, <\/em>near Avignon<\/em>. This beautiful hike starting in the old town, is named after some of the places where the painter set up his easel. Fascinated by the luminous nature scenery, he painted there over 130 paintings. You walk outside the town through vineyards and olive groves that carpet the landscape. After climbing up through the woods to the Alpilles<\/em> crest, you can enjoy outstanding 360\u00b0 views.<\/p>\n

This walk could also be named \u201cLe Rocher des Deux Trous<\/em>\u201d (the Rock with two holes): two big holes were formed at the base of a boulder. They can be seen almost from the start ; but then, they remain invisible for long, before reappearing suddenly, when very close. Just before the end, you pass near the Greco-Roman site of Glanum<\/em>: there are visible remains of a city that grew up 2,600 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>In the footsteps of Marcel Pagnol
through the craggy hills above Marseille<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Marcel Pagnol<\/em>, a pioneer in the history of talkies, was also one of the first filmmakers who used to shoot films on location. From 1933 to 1954, in a dozen of them, he shot many scenes in the rugged hills outside Marseille<\/em>. These outdoors were his holidays playground as a child.
This hike through garrigue<\/em> takes you to the location of two movies sets: the fake remnants of the abandoned village of Aubignane<\/em> in Harvest<\/em> (1937) and the ruined Ang\u00e8le’s Farmhouse<\/em> in Ang\u00e8le<\/em> (1934). You then catch sight of the rustic landscapes that were the backdrop to his childhood memoirs: ‘My Father’s Glory’<\/em> and ‘My Mother’s Castle’<\/em>.
However, in his novels, nature is not a backdrop, but the main character! And you feel it so intensely while listening to the stories the young Marcel <\/em>lived with his friend Lili<\/em>: your guide may convey the sensuality of the writer as he describes this nature he fell in love with. Watching the towering crags that stick out all around from the pine-forested hills will definitely help: Barres du St-Esprit<\/em>, T\u00eate Rouge<\/em>, Taoum\u00e9<\/em> or Garlaban.<\/em> And smelling rosemary and thyme will contribute too!<\/p>\n

In the footsteps of Jean Giono
in the Lure mountains
<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This hike takes place in a part of Provence out of the tourist way. The south-facing slope of the Lure mountains<\/em> that nourished Giono<\/em>‘s dreams is partly made of these highlands “where deserts are really desert lands”, as he wrote; a limitless stretch of barren land, a region of shepherds, dry stone walls and wind; a land of uncountable starry nights, where winters are harsh and soils stubborn. In addition to the tales about Giono<\/em>‘s works, two other moments will probably remain engraved in your memories: the panorama from the ridge and the sight of the Chapellanes<\/em>, this 150-year old dry-stone sheepfold, built of half a million stones without any binder. Giono<\/em>‘ s world: truly a world apart.<\/p>\n
